Ancient civilizations used massage as a treatment for many diseases. The therapists were practical people with little formal training. Medicine has come a long way since then and todaii ¿½ s massage therapists are well trained health workers. They go scientifically designed course of instruction that covers both theory and practice.

Massage therapy is given to the manipulation of soft tissues of the body blows, pressure, squeeze or capture. It relaxes muscles and relieves tension, knots, spasms and cramps. The therapy increases blood circulation, stimulate the lymphatic system and calms the nerves.

Most states and some counties and cities have their own systems of licensing for the therapist. A person must pass the exam board accredited by the federal government. Training is provided by many schools that are accredited by professional massage associations.

Average of 500 hours of classroom education, combined with hands-on supervised practice is required for registration. High school diploma is the minimum qualification for admission to the program.

Students learn anatomy, physiology, pathology and kinesiology before moving on to a massage. Massage history and theory, and practical techniques are the main course requirements. Treatment principles, ethics, nutrition and complete the program.

Setting high standards of professional ethics is much interest in massage. Identification with commercial sex massages in the past is very rooted in the public mind, so that professional associations is much emphasis on ethics.

There are over 100 different massage techniques. From basic general massage, like Swedish massage, sports massage and aromatherapy, the student advances very specialized and targeted techniques.
