When a person shows behavioral and mental instability, it is
colloquially referred by the society as insanity. Any act
against the norms and standards of the society is mostly labeled insane,
especially when the person loses contact with reality. However, the medical
point of view does not accept the term “insane.” Instead, abnormal mental
conditions are termed as mental disorders and losing contact with the reality
is referred to as psychosis. On the other hand, the public doesn’t care that
much about terms anyway. Their main concern is how to eliminate any mind-crippling
condition.
Moreover, there are ways to avoid developing mental disorder
and one as such is enhancing mental strength. Mental strength is the ability of
the mind to sustain a healthy state of mind in the midst of wear and tear
situations like death of a loved one; being jobless; chronic illness and alike.
Once a person’s mind becomes weak, the mental status becomes altered. If this
alteration in mental status remains unattended, it will end up to a certain
mental disorder. Thus, one must consider the following to keep one’s mind
healthy:
- Good support system
According to research, most depressed individuals are those
who don’t have anyone by their side to listen to their sentiments. Otherwise,
there are significant others around them but do not provide a good support
system during feelings of loneliness, frustration, failure, anger and other unpleasant
emotions. Having someone to lean on or at least to share one’s feelings with is
essential to strengthen one’s mind. This makes a person feel that he/she is not
alone or that somebody understands him/her. Besides, loved ones are the best
people to be around you when you feel unwell. They can bring smile back into
your face by simply being with you and listening to you. Consulting a counselor
can also be of great help if significant others are not available.
- Be physically active
Exercise is considered another outlet of stress and
emotions. However, the means of self-expression is by physical activities. Some
people unwind by playing their favorite sports like basketball, tennis,
swimming, boxing, hiking, surfing and so on. Aside from keeping the mind well,
the body remains healthy too.
- Balance nutrition
With balance nutrition, every part of the body receives
enough nourishment, especially the brain that controls all body functions
including the state of mind. Therefore, eat foods that are healthy for the
brain and entire body. Never skip meals because the brain needs food to
function properly. In fact, anyone who is hungry usually experiences poor
concentration, headache, sleepiness, weakness and dizziness. How much more when
a person constantly skips meals?
- Adequate sleep
Along with balance nutrition, adequate sleep is significant
to enhance mental strength. Sleeping is a means to rest the central command
system of the body, which is the brain. Similar to nutrition, sleep deprivation
can affect mental functions. Hence, a person is required to sleep 8 hours
daily. Not necessarily that when a person does not sleep enough, he will
immediately have a mental disorder. It takes repetitive and chronic sleep
deprivation to alter a person’s mental status.
- Avoid addictive substances like alcoholic beverages and prohibited drugs
Alcohol and drugs are the top substances that affect a
person’s state of mind. These substances can cross the blood-brain barrier that
is why most of their effects show that the brain functions are altered.
Remember that the brain controls every function of every organ system in the
body. Most people intoxicated with alcohol or drugs lose control over their
temper, behavior and even experiences poor mind and body coordination. Since
these substances are toxins, they can also destroy the brain cells.
In
general, never do a thing that will harm the brain and always promote a healthy
lifestyle. Everything sounds basic but still many people does not understand
the real significance of healthy living towards a stronger state of mind.
Treatment for mental disorders might be available but wouldn’t it be better to
prevent it at all?
